Welcome
The Barrier Industrial Council (BIC) invites you to experience the history of the union movement and the struggle for workers' rights which have led to the working conditions which most of us now enjoy.

Since its inception in 1923- 1924 the Barrier Industrial Council has remained the peak union body in Broken Hill and a big player in the city's affairs.
The Barrier Industrial Council is an organisation that sets the city apart from the rest of the nation.
No other Australian city has experienced the industrial strife that Broken Hill has endured. It led to the founding of the labour movement and the working conditions which most of us now enjoy.
The city's character has been shaped and its courage tested by long and bitter strikes.
Because the workers fought for their rights, Broken Hill has gained a reputation as a very tough place - and so it has been for companies that don't give their employees a fair go.
But you will find that such struggles have made the people of Broken Hill amiable, open and helpful to newcomers.
Today, the union movement is moving forward and looking to a bright future. We can look back with respect to the past and understand why unions are so important to the interests of workers and the building of a fairer nation.

The BIC is not and has never been a machine. It has always been made up of workers doing what the majority of union members needed, wanted or asked them to do.
